Jesse Warden (dot Kizz-ohm) was recently in town to meet with Bill Gates and the Silverlight team.  Jesse is well-known for helping people fuse hardcore coding and Flash design.  Between the lively and top-secret internal meetings, Nishant grabbed a camera and asked Jesse to share some of his thoughts with us.  You'll hear his thoughts about where the industry is headed, as well as some unedited and frank feedback about where the industry players are doing well and not so well.

Nick; thanks for the comments!  There is a known issue with the installer for anyone who installed the SL 1.1 preview; once you get updated to the latest (by manually uninstalling any old versions and then going to the site), the upgrades should work properly.

The feedback on play button and vol slider will be passed on; the 00:00 was my fault.  Leaking the fact that the meetings occured is my fault as well.

@MD,SB: As if both companies' products are flawless.  :P

This site failed to play the video, complaining I had the wrong version of Silverlight.

The MSFT SL site incorrectly stated I had the latest version.

8kb of data was installed by the 4.7 MB Silverlight installer DMG.

In my opinion, it's obvious the SL installer detector is merely "good enough".  This video player's volume slider puck is too small.  The "Play" button shouldn't be greyed-out at startup.  It's irritating that the timecode text reports "00:00 / 0:00" before I hit the grey play button.  Top-secret means don't talk about the fact the meetings occurred.  The summary and video didn't grab my attention and the sound should be recorded more carefully next time.

Mike,

You mean you still haven't got Silverlight figured out since Ice Cube story broke? Seems to happen a lot when there is Flash centric buzz floating around :) .. must be something in the AIR at the time hehehe ;)

I even noticed you also had the same problem around the Halo3 launch. Hopefully we can get it fixed before we get involved with any more cross-over in Flash centric buzz as it does seem like a serious issue and I for one would love to resolve this for you ASAP.

I have my iMac and MacBook Pro waiting on standby to trouble shoot this for you (I've mirrored your above environment and unable to replicate, even installed various iterations of Flash assuming maybe there could be a conflict?)

grab me on twitter or Instant Messenger and i'll be more than happy to work through this with you?

I'd like to watch this video but the moment I hit the page it warned me that I needed to update my Silverlight install, taking me away from this site and over to the Silverlight download page, which told me I already had the latest version. I'm running Safari on Mac OS X 10.5. Any thoughts on how to fix this?

Major bummer. Jesse is always entertaining.

Thanks,
MD
