MIX08 is next week, and sadly, this is the last episode of The Signal. Mike and Thomas start by talking about real code in keynotes, the special screening of The King of Kong, and Steve Wiebe’s Donkey Kong world record attempt. You’ll hear a bit about what it takes to coordinate a record breaking attempt and why we have to respect the chain of custody. Then, after Thomas reminisces about his mobile breathalyzer experience, we call Jimmy Kim from Nexon/Innotive (at 3:00am in the morning!). Jimmy talks about his panel and session at MIX08, how WPF, Silverlight, and XAML make it easy to target multiple clients, how clients like BMW, Hyundai, and Nike need “one source, multi-use” for their assets, why he worked for six months to tweak BMW’s user interface, how design impacts the bottom line, and his session at MIX08 titled Effective User Interfaces in WPF and Silverlight.

As mentioned, this is the last episode of The Signal for MIX08. Thank you for listening, and we hope to see you at the event!

Scott Stanfield from Vertigo brings his toys to the luxurious studio and comes up with the new acronym WYNWYNI (What You Need, When You Need It). Time is taken to reminisce about demos like FM Stocks and ASP.NET Starter Kits and talk about the current Family.Show (and consanguineal marriages) and Slide.Show. Then the show really gets rolling with special guitar grease for Guitar Hero, how 18 employees attack the MIX conference, Scott’s super-secret blacklisted MIX08 session (“one of the coolest things I’ve seen from Microsoft in a long time”), and Mike’s new catch-phrase…we’re so hot!

The Signal is back with another Earth-shattering episode! Thomas and Mike chat about the design and experience of Wrigley’s 5 Gum, and Mike reviews the Helvetica documentary just released on DVD. Paul Dawson from Conchango swoops in and rescues the show while explaining the title of his MIX08 session, Virgins, Spaceships, and Hob-nailed Boots. Paul talks about Virgin Atlantic, creating experiences that employ all of the senses, the increasing recognition of user-centered design, Experience Architectures, using stories to paint a vision, spying and guerilla ethnography, and why Paul made the trip from the U.K. to MIX06 and MIX07. Yes, we said guerilla ethnography.   The Signal is a weekly podcast that connects you to behind-the-scenes activity related to MIX08. We’ll interview speakers, attendees, staff, and other notables. To close it out, Nishant threatens Mike about pulling his underpants over the back of his head.   The Signal is a weekly podcast that connects you to behind-the-scenes activity related to MIX08. In this week’s episode, find out why Mike and Thomas should have their podcasting license revoked. Then, hear from Drew Robbins, a Technical Evangelist for IIS, who will be speaking about PHP and IIS7 at MIX08. Learn a bit about developing PHP applications on Windows Vista and deploying them on Windows Server 2008, including the new FastCGI component. Drew also talks about the Open Space area at MIX08, self-organizing content, recording and publishing of conversations, and taboo topics. So say we all.

This week on The Signal, Mike and Thomas use Oprah as an excuse to talk about some of their favorite web sites, including Slashdot.org and TMZ.com. Then, they interview Michael Suesserman, the MIX08 Content Owner on topics like: where does the MIX08 content come from, sessions versus panels, the fact that nearly 50% of the content is delivered by third parties, Battlestar Galactica, using “math, science, and dumb luck” to balance sessions, Twitter feedback, the elements of a good session, Michael’s day job with gadgets, and finally, gambling, math, user experience, and the Fairy Forest.

Thomas is alone in the big, cavernous studio and introduces the interview Mike and Thomas did with Hans Hugli and Glenn Podany. They explain all the great opportunities at MIX to immerse yourself in the technology discussed there. If you are more of a “hands-on” person, this show is for you.

It’s time for another episode of The Signal. This week, we respond to a listener call about what traditional developers can expect at MIX08, and Thomas talks to Mike about his seam carving project called SEAMonster. Then, we hear from Robert Hess (who you may recognize from The .NET Show). Robert has been doing keynote demos for over 19 years and has a lot to share about what it takes to make them happen. Along the way, he touches on topics like: why the demoer may know too much, what we can learn from Mark Twain, the hardware behind the stage, Bill Gates, the VB demo, and an 8-day workweek, what to do when 5 blocks of internet access goes down, and his alter-ego at DrinkBoy.com. Oh…and why Robert uses a dial-up modem. You don’t want to miss this.
